Dhanamanjuri University (DM University) has come into existence under "The Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017", which came into force on 6 April 2018 through a notification published in the Manipur Gazette by the Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Manipur. The Dhanamanjuri University Bill, 2017 was passed on the floor of the Manipur Legislative Assembly on 3 August 2017. The University was established under the National Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

Dhanamanjuri University is a long-cherished dream of our founding fathers and Maharani Dhanamanjuri, whose vision inspired the creation of this seat of learning. Manipur, an ancient kingdom, possessed a composite traditional system of education in warfare, martial arts, games and sports, culture, and various professional disciplines. This legacy of knowledge and civilized existence has been carried forward through generations.

Ancient works of knowledge preserved in the original scripts of Manipur stand as testimony to the intellectual traditions of the land. The state has long celebrated the pursuit of knowledge while maintaining its cultural ethos and remaining receptive to change and progress.

The University was established under the National Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) as part of its primary objective to convert colleges into cluster universities. Maharani Dhanamanjuri gifted us Dhanamanjuri College, and in recognition of her contribution to higher education, the University has been named in her honor.

The University comprises five constituent colleges:

• DM College of Science
• DM College of Arts
• DM College of Commerce
• G.P. Women's College
• LMS Law College

These colleges occupy common, adjoining, or neighboring physical spaces and together form the academic foundation of Dhanamanjuri University.

At present, DM University functions from the DM College campus situated in the heart of Imphal city. The campus is bounded by National Highway No. 2 on the east, Thangmeiband Road on the west and north, and the Naga River on the south.

Ghanapriya Women's College is located southwest of Kangla, the historic palace of Manipur, near Raj Bhavan. LMS Law College is situated directly opposite the DM Campus across National Highway No. 2.
